All about Causes of Diabetes

CAUSES OF DIABETES

I have recently been given steroid treatment (prednisolone) for severe arthritis. My joints are better but my doctor has now found sugar in my urine and tells me I have diabetes. Is this likely to be permanent?

Steroids are effective treatment for a number of conditions but they may cause side effects. One of these is to cause diabetes, which can sometimes be controlled with tablets (e.g. gliclazide). If large doses of steroids are being used, people often need insulin to keep the blood glucose under control. When you stop steroid therapy, there is a good chance that the diabetes will disappear.

However, you may have had diabetes without knowing it before you started on steroids, in which case you will still have diabetes after stopping steroids and will need to continue some form of treatment indefinitely.

I am told that other hormones that the body produces may cause diabetes. Is this true?

Diabetes occurs when there is not enough insulin for the body’s needs.

Sometimes excessive amounts of other hormones will tend to push up the blood sugar levels. If the body cannot respond with enough extra insulin, diabetes may result. Thus someone who produces too much thyroid hormone (‘thyrotoxicosis’ or ‘hyperthyroidism’) may develop diabetes, which goes away when their thyroid is restored to normal. Thyrotoxicosis and diabetes tend to run together in families, and people with one of these conditions are more likely to develop the other.

Sometimes a person will produce excessive quantities of steroid hormones (Cushing’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome), and this may lead to diabetes (see the previous two questions for the connection between steroids and diabetes). Acromegaly is a condition where excess quantities of growth hormone are produced and this too may lead to diabetes.

I have had to go to hospital for repeated attacks of pancreatitis and now have diabetes. I am told that these two conditions are related – is this true?

Pancreatitis can be a very painful and unpleasant illness: it means that your pancreas has become inflamed. The pancreas is the gland that produces insulin as well as other hormones and digestive juices. If it is severely inflamed or damaged, it may not be able to produce enough insulin. Sometimes diabetes develops during or after an attack of pancreatitis and tablets or insulin are needed to keep control of the blood glucose. This form of diabetes is usually, but not always, permanent.

What other diseases would increase the chances of getting diabetes?

There are three groups of such diseases:

  • Glandular disorders, in particular thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid), acromegaly (excess growth hormone) and Cushing’s disease (excess steroid hormone, see above); polycystic ovary syndrome and fatty liver disease are both linked with insulin resistance and therefore carry an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes;
  • Diseases of the pancreas, including pancreatitis, cancer of the pancreas, iron overload (haemochromatosis) and cystic fibrosis (a serious inherited childhood disorder); surgical removal of the pancreas (for either pancreatitis or cancer) also causes diabetes;
  • Medical problems, such as heart attacks, pneumonia and major surgical operations which put stress on the body: the diabetes usually clears up when the stress is removed but these individuals may be more at risk of diabetes in the future.

Glucophage: An Effective Diabetes Medication

in Anti-Diabetic, by Foxy

Glucophage, Fortamet, Glucophage XR, Glucometza and Riomet are some of the brands under which Metformin is sold in the market. Glucophae is a medication which is used to treat diabetes patients. It is an oral anti diabetes medication. It is used only among people suffering from type 2 diabetes or non- insulin dependent diabetes patients. Glucophage is never prescribed for patients with Type 1 diabetes even though it is sometimes used with insulin or other medications for treatment.

Patients with kidney disease and diabetes ketoacidosis are prevented from using the medication. It is necessary to discuss with the doctor before the medicine is used by patients suffering from heart or liver disease. There are incidents of people developing a severe life threatening condition called lactic acidosis after taking Glucophage. At times the blood sugar can fall rapidly. It is better to stay alert so that low sugar level can be detected easily.

It is advised to follow the dosing schedule prescribed by the doctor. Glucophage is usually taken with a meal unless specifically mentioned by the doctor. Some types of the medicine are to be taken once every day after the evening meal. The delayed release tablet should not be taken as a whole. It should not be crushed or broken.

Lactic acidosis is a serious and life threatening side effect caused by Glucophage. The signs of this problem include weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain, feeling light-headed, and fainting. Other serious side effects include feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; swelling or rapid weight gain; fever; chills; body aches and other flu symptoms. These side effects demand immediate medical treatment. It is better to avoid using this drug if allergies appear. The common allergies include hives; breathing trouble; swelling of lips, tongue, face and throat. To attain positive results and reduce the number of side effects it is better to strictly follow the directions of the doctor.

Glucophage is a well known drug and at the same time it is widely considered as the best option for most of the strange diseases that you might come along. It is always advised to buy these drugs at Online Pharmacy, as you can save a lot of time and money.

The Facts And Risks Of Actos

in Anti-Diabetic, by Foxy

Diabetes is a strange disease. To this day, we really don’t know what causes it and we can’t recreate it in a laboratory setting. However, we do have treatments for diabetes. One of those treatments is Actos. This article is going to explain what Actos is, how it works and what the potential risks of this drug are. Hopefully, after reading this, you will be able to make an informed decision as to whether or not Actos is something you want to take.

Actos is actually the brand name for the drug pioglitazone. It comes in tablet form in strengths of 15, 30 and 45 milligrams. The drug is manufactured by Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd. It is available by prescription only and was approved by the FDA on July 15, 1999. Of course FDA approval means very little these days. If you doubt that, just take a look at the Voixx debacle.

The thing that diabetics need to know about Actos is that it is for type 2 diabetes only. This drug will not work for type 1, or juvenile diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Also, if you suffer from heart failure, have fluid retention or any kind of liver disease, Actos may not be an option for you. You’ll need to check with your doctor and he will make an evaluation.

What Actos does is it improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Actos can be used with a variety of other drugs in combination with diet and exercise when Actos alone is not sufficient enough to keep the patient’s sugar level under control.

The biggest risk from taking Actos is liver damage. In extreme cases use of this drug can lead to the liver transplant or death. Before prescribing Actos for you, your doctor will do tests on your liver to determine if it is safe for you to take the drug. Of course this is only a guess. All drug use comes with risks.

Another danger of taking Actos is that your blood sugar may actually get too low. This actually occurs when taking Actos with insulin. If you suspect you are suffering from low blood sugar, which is usually characterized by light headedness and fainting, call your doctor immediately.

If you’re a woman taking Actos who has reached menopause, there is the possibility that Actos can start you ovulating again. If this happens and you engage in unprotected sex, you could get pregnant. Please keep this in mind.

Some of the more common side effects from taking Actos are coughs, headaches, colds, stuffy nose, sore throat, muscle pain, swelling and water retention.

They say sometimes the cure is worse than what ails us. Actos has the potential to be life threatening. If you’re interested in natural treatments for diabetes, they are out there. You’ll find more information in my signature.

News About the Type 2 Diabetes Drug Avandia

in Anti-Diabetic, by Foxy

Studies continue to try to dive into the cause and cure for type 2 diabetes and the drug once thought to be a major breakthrough for type 2 diabetes, Avandia, is coming under a lot of significant study and skepticism.

Health Canada is currently claiming that the deaths of six Canadians are “very likely” linked to the Type 2 Diabetes drug Avandia, which of course raises concerns about whether the potential detrimental effects of the drug are worth the risks. Other studies on the drug Avandia indicate that it may be linked to a much higher risk of heart attack in certain patients, according to reports in the respected New England Journal of Medicine. To support this study, Health Canada says that 28 Canadians who had been taking Avandia for type 2 diabetes had suffered heart attacks since being introduced to the drug Avandia in 2000. In the US, there have been 19 confirmed reports of heart attacks from US citizens who have been taking Avandia.

While this is not a lot of people based on the number of total people taking Avandia, the number is statistically significant, and people taking a drug for one ailment should not be “e encouraging” another, potentially life-threatening disorder. More clinical study is needed, but the evidence exists that there is probably a connection between the heart attacks and Avandia. While the studies do not conclusively prove that Avandia is the culprit and Avandia has definitely been ruled out in some of the heart attack cases, there are strong signs that it is a factor in the majority of the cases.

A review published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates multiple studies on the drug Avandia which indicate a higher risk of heart attack in approximately 43% of patients who take the drug.

The pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline PLC manufactures Avandia. To add to their problems, the Food and Drug Administration has declined to grant a priority review to their newest experimental cancer vaccine Cervarix, which serves to add pressure to the company with the current controversy surrounding their manufacture of Avandia. The Avandia family of drugs manufactured by Glaxo includes Avandamet and Avandaryl, which showed sales last year of well over a billion dollars. This makes the Avandia family of drugs the second best selling drug after the company’s Advair product which is for asthma treatment.

While Glaxo claims that the reported incidents of heart attack are “statistically the same” for Avandia patients as those patients who are on other anti-diabetes drugs, it remains clear that further research and study is required before these drugs can be claimed safe and effective for treating what they were designed to treat.
